Essential Fats and Your Health

Let’s take a look into the health conditions that can arise from a deficiency of essential fats (Omega 3 and Omega 6), what some of the causes may be, and what you can do about it. First, we will look into why you may be deficit in Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils:

  1. You might not be taking in enough Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils.
  2. You may be using the wrong form of EFAs (essential fatty acids) such as trans-linoleic acid instead of gamma-linoleic acid or just linoleic acid.
  3. Your body may lack enzymes or have a genetic defect which prevents the conversion of essential fats to usable forms of GLA, EPA, and DHA
  4. You may have a deficiency of another key nutrient used in production of prostaglandins from the essential Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils. 

Prostaglandins, mentioned in item four above, are hormone-like substances that are found in, and regulate the activity of, every cell in the body. A key to our health, they are made from essential oils, which is one of the many critical roles these essential fats have in our body. They are manufactured by each cell or organ, are metabolized quickly by each cell, and must be replenished. That is why a daily supply of essential fats can have a critical impact on health. 

Now we will go over the essential fats and your health in regard to a few common health conditions directly tied into the essential fats Omega 3 and Omega 6. Before we go into specifics, however, note the following issues that developed in participants during a study in which essential fatty acids were deprived in the diet: 

  • unhealthy skin

  • lack of resistance to infection

The following are specific Illness or conditions that are impacted directly by essential fatty acids: 

ACNE – Acne showed significant improvement when EFAs (essential fatty acids) were taken, along with vitamin C and Zinc.

ALLERGIES - PGE1 (prostaglandins) stimulate the production of T-cell suppressors and help control balance in our immune system. When disrupted, common harmless substances can create allergies and sensitivities.
CANCER - T-cells help control the multiplying of cancer cells in our body. EFAs convert to PGE1 (prostaglandins) that activate T-cells.
MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS - It is believed that the auto-immune system plays a part in this disease. Research shows a deficit in PGE’s in MS patients, which in turn, weakens the immune system and increases the damage.
DIABETES - Studies show that the disease characteristics of diabetes (heart, eyes, and kidneys damage) can be greatly reduced when supplemented with large doses of linoleic acid.
ECZEMA - T-lymphocytes are low in people with eczema. EFAs are shown to boost these T-lymphocyte levels.
HEART DISEASE – In the body, GLA (gama-linolenic acid) converts to PGE1, which is known to reduce cholesterol, blood pressure, and prevent blood clots.
FEMALE-SPECIFIC ISSUES - Studies show that women with PMS are low in EFAs which may cause low levels of prolactin, the hormone known to change moods. 90% saw dramatic improvements with EFAs added to diet. EFAs naturally help balance hormones during menstruation and have a positive effect on depressions, insomnia, and pain.
HYPERACTIVE CHILDREN - Boys need at least three times as much essential fats as young girls do. Studies show a dramatic improvement in 66% of hyperactive children when the correct blend of EFAs are added to the diet.
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS – R.A. is an immunological/inflammation disorder resulting from the body producing too much PGE2 (bad) and not enough PGE1 (good). EFAs, specifically GLA, convert to PGE1 in the body.
FAT MANAGEMENT - Studies have shown positive results for overweight individuals when EFAs were added to their diet. GLA increases the level of brown fat activity which helps burn fat stores.
SCHIZOPHRENIA - Those with this condition do not normally make PGE1, and are low in other EFAs.

The above list is but a short inventory of some of the illnesses that may be positively affected with the consumption of a blended form of EFAs.
